Weekly Store Update

January 28, 2012

Couldn’t have asked for a more epic week in January than this past one! Insane weather, good waves, and mellow crowds!

Things are just starting to pick up here at the shop, too. This week we got in a ton of new Vans footwear: The Rad! Pack for the groms, new California Collection goods and a few new retro looking skate kicks, including the Iggy Pop collab 106 Vulc. On top of that, we were the first shop to receive the new Spring 2012 Warriors of Radness collection, and it’s pretty epic once again: retro faded cord shorts, cheesy Hawaiian shirts, and the Respect Kahuna T featuring The Duke. All pretty rad.

To round things up, Jack Coleman cruised through and did an art install on our backwall featuring some photos he took while filming his new Polyester surf movie. Our music section got a nice little update too with some fresh new vinyl and cds from Tommy Guerrero, Mikal Cronin, and The Moonhearts.

Thursday Tunage – Radio Moscow

January 26, 2012

This is an instrumental jam [heavy on the 'mental'] from the Iowa threesome Radio Moscow. Some weird Jimi Hendrix reincarnate group if you ask us. These guys are so rad and heavy. Thought we’d post this up this week as we’re headed up to LA to see them play on Saturday with another insane band from Sweden: Graveyard. Tickets are only $12 and it’s at The Bootleg Theater. Hopefully see some of you rock heads there!

The Fiberglass Chandelier of Forgotten Tides

January 25, 2012

Made by local legendary beachcomber Jim Olarte, this Fiberglass Chandelier took 10-15 years of monthly beachcombing to collect and create. Made of only found objects, the strands of this art piece contain pieces of lost ships, boats, kayaks, surfboards, and more. It serves as a reminder of the many ways in which we enjoy the ocean, and the many years we’ve had the pleasure of doing so. It hangs near the back of our shop in Laguna Beach.

Thalia Surf Presents: The Wax Ball Vol. 3

January 9, 2012

Thursday, January 12th @ The Marine Room Tavern, Laguna Beach CA

With Live Performances By:

Quest?ons – A new prog rock band that hails from right here in Laguna Beach and consists of 4 incredibly talented rockers, who also rip at surfing and being rad.

Matt McCluer – Vocalist and guitar player for the band The Sweet Sweet Things, McCluer is a Costa Mesa man with a twangy blues rock style all his own. He’s so far released 3 solo albums with no end in sight and may be bringing some special guests along with him to play.

The Wax Ball is a monthly music showcase hosted at The Marine Room, Laguna’s oldest bar [1930s] which happens to be owned by the towns mayor. Laguna is world renowned for its artists and creativity, but the town is void of any good music. 80s night and reggae parties dominate the scene and the local surf community has been forced to head out of town for good surf rock, punk, blues, and garage. The Wax Ball, presented by Thalia Surf and sponsors, will fill this void, bringing something to Laguna Beach that hasn’t been here since the 60?s, music worth seeing, supporting, and following.

The Wax Ball happens once a month, on the second Thursday, and is bringing a refreshing and eager crowd to The Marine Room. There is literally nothing else happening in terms of music anywhere in or surrounding Laguna and we feel that Thalia Surf and our friends are the ones who will do it the best.

Supporting sponsors include: Brixton, Raen Optics, and Deus Ex Machina

Thursday Tunage: Greensleeves by The Lords

January 5, 2012

Get ready for the German rock group from the early sixties and who are still around today, just not the complete original lineup. These guys were a semi-comedy troupe of a band, kind of like the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band of Britain (another great mid sixties band). The fact that these dudes are dressed like pirates and have medieval haircuts really makes this live footage of them in 1966 all the better.
