“Rowed Out” by The Eyes

The Eyes formed in London in 1964, ushering in pure 60′s Mod-rock filled with teen angst, adrenaline pumped guitar, and radical vocals. The Eyes started out as The Renegades, an instrumental band until they added a vocalist. Although they never made it huge, ‘Rowed Out’ and other singles like ‘When The Night Falls’ and their homage to The Who ‘My Degeneration’ are comparable to all the good stuff coming out of the UK at the time [ie The Who, Kinks, Small Faces]. If you’re in to 60s Mod and garage, meet The Eyes.

The Wax Ball

November 4, 2011

We admit it, we’ve gotten a little bored with the music scene here in Laguna. Time to change things, stir it up. We figure nobody else in this town is going to do it, so we’re starting something. Bringing back a music scene like Laguna had in the late 60′s, early 70′s. Or at least we’re going to try.

So, we present to you: The Wax Ball, a monthly music series hosted and presented by us, Thalia Surf Shop. The Wax Ball will happen once a month at our local watering hole, The Marine Room. Built in the 1930s, The Marine Room hails as Laguna Beach’s oldest bar, and one of our favorite spots.

Come join us beforehand at the shop for good friends and some pre-drinks, and then we’ll head over to The Marine Room around 9pm. Live music this month will be Devil’s Gravy, a two piece rock band featuring our friends Jack Rose and Jon Arman, and Reed McMillan and the Ellery, a bluesy-rock band from Costa Mesa.

Poler Stuff

October 23, 2011

The One Man Tent has shown up here at the shop (should be up online soon), and we’ve already been putting it to the test. Corey here at the shop has already taken it on numerous camping trips with another one planned for this weekend. Recently we caught him setting it up during his lunch break and hanging down at Thalia St. beach…. Poler is one of our new favorite companies, combining intelligent and thought out design with practicality and humor, something much needed in the camping/outdoor world [and our world]. We’re all huge nature and adventure enthusiasts here and Poler has found a comfy new home in our store, just wait till you see the new stuff we’re bringing in the coming weeks. Check out our Poler Collection here!

Get stoked. Go outside.

Xanadu x Regular Surfboards

October 22, 2011

We are pleased to announce the release of one of our finest collaborations yet: Xanadu for Regular Surfboards. The Regular Surfboards are called The Swami and available in 5’8″ – 6’0″ and are some of the freshest designs we’ve ever done. They are a hybrid, high performance shape, able to be configured as either a thruster set up or quad fin set up depending on your liking. Stay tuned for some recent footage of shop rider Hans Hagen teaching the grommets a thing or two about surfing a Swami.

Quote from Hans Hagen about the boards.

“This board is the product of eons of development. Xanadu has been making my boards for more years than most marriages. And speaking of marriages, this is one worth celebrating. The Swami is the combination of two of my all-time California surfboards: The Gipos and Pig Two. All wrapped with fresh new collaboration logos, pigmented glass, unique pinlines and a double bump Hindu frump.”

Limited run only, exclusively at Thalia Surf.

A South African garage band from the 60s ‘Os Impacto’ covering Eddie Floyd’s ‘Knock On Wood’. This is a recording from the late sixties, when there was a movement in South Africa loosely known as ‘Cazumbi’, which was a trend where South African bands emulated the garage rock and ‘british invasion’ styles that were popular in America. What came from it was garage rock, but with more emphasis on the vocals, and in turn, blended into a style all it’s own, something between garage rock and dirty soul singing, pretty epic if you ask us.

Artist Jeff Boozer via Oakland, CA

October 17, 2011

Our most recent artist collaboration comes from Oakland, California with a man by the name of Jeff Boozer.

Jeff’s most noted work comes from outside the surf industry, where he’s been creating iconic rock posters for some of the heavies like The Black Angels, Cake, MC Hammer [yeah, totally rad!], Camera Obscura, O’Death, and too many more to name. His unique style and characters are awesome and captivating to say the least, match that with his handmade screen prints and you’ve got yourself quite an insane package.

We hit him up to do some collab designs for our Thalia Surf Clothing label, and not only was he totally down, but turns out, he’s been a longtime fan and long distance customer of ours for years. Match made in salty heaven? You betcha, and we couldn’t be more stoked. So you can imagine our excitement when we received this awesome little gift in the mail, some of his rad posters and custom made postcards bearing The Dude, one of the designs he developed with us for a Thalia Surf T! The two surf t shirts he did for us are the Mornin’ Tee and The Dude.

Look for an interview with Jeff in the near future so you can get even more friendly and personal with him.
