We can’t get enough of the new album just released this week by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, called II (the roman numeral for two). This track is the first song on the album titled ‘From The Sun’ and with it’s ethereal psychedelic pop grooves we really are having a hard time turning it off.

Beached Days #2 – Release Party Recap!
January 28, 2013

Beached Days came, Beached Days saw, and if you were in attendance last Friday, then you’re well aware that Beached Days conquered here at Thalia Surf.
This past Friday we gathered at the shop with friends and punks, new faces and grommets by the dozens. Pretty inspiring turnout for the release of Beached Days: Issue 2, one of the more in your face surf rags out there, fronted by the overseeing captain Mitch Abshere. Was it the free beer? Maybe. Or the free tacos a la Bull Taco? Yeah, a bit. Or was it the photo exhibition by up and coming photog Jack Belli? Yeah, we all drooled a bit in front of the photos taken by the man behind theohsea.blogspot.com. Mostly though it was one hell of an excuse to spend a rainy friday night with some friends and talk about, well, whatever we wanted to. To a blaring soundtrack of obscure rockabilly and outsider surf rock, as well as some moving footage from some old Kenneth Anger biker flicks, the scene here at the shop for the mag release was anything but normal, and that’s the way we like it. Especially when the cops and fire dept came at the end and literally had no idea what to do with us. Quite frankly, we didn’t know what to do with them either. Wave goodbye and see ya later? A familiar tune we’ll be singing to Mitch and the Beached Days crew. When’s Issue 3 coming out?! Until next time…
Check out more of our photos at our Facebook Page and you can buy the mag here.

Jack Coleman’s Temple Film Premiere Recap
December 21, 2012

It’s always nice changing things up.
We got a new office and event space, known from here on out as the Thalia Hideout. So why not invite our friends over for some brews and tunes?
Feverishly battling the pre-apocalyptic holiday traffic slowly spreading over all of Los Angeles, our moto headed friends Deus Ex Machina dropped by and invaded our Hideout last night. What they brought with them was a handful of their iron horses, a tower of Primo beer, and Temple – their latest film made by Jack Coleman. Featuring amazing footage of their Bali compound and the wave slaying talents of Salsa and friends. In a packed crowd of all ager ragers, Temple was blasted on the backwall due in part to Al Knost randomly having the one cable we were missing for the projector in his newly purchased van (thanks a ton, Al!). After the movie was set and done the good ol’ boys from Raen Optics dropped in with their recent collaboration shades they did with Deus and the night pushed on to the live tunes of Hindu Pirates. Blending a surfy blues sound with some down right southern rock snarl, the HB based Hindu Pirates played The Hideout in proper fashion with at least a few kids hanging from the ceiling.
All in all it ‘twas a helluva night before x-mas, and more importantly, a proper groundbreaking ceremony to our newest space.
Thanks to Deus, Raen Optics, Primo, Al Knost, Jack Coleman, and the nice old lady next door who didn’t call the cops. Without all of you, last night wouldn’t have happened.
Check out the new collab optics from Raen and Deus!

Holiday Employee Picks – Josh Tully
December 13, 2012
It’s that time of year, when we all make wishlists of the things we would like to buy and gift to others. So in the spirit of the season we decided to ask our employees what their favorite items are in shop. Here is the third in the series of posts we have queued for this month. Enjoy!

“I have selected a few items from the shop that can describe me. I enjoy being around creative minds and trying out things that allow you to be creative in the ocean. What drives me in surfing is riding all kinds of boards from old to new, long to short, fat to slim, heavy to light. Allowing yourself to adapt to new things is what allows you to grow and I feel is what keeps you young at heart. Enjoy what you have and share more waves. Feliz Navidad!”
1. George Greenough Classic Surf T – There is a lot to be said about innovation and design in the surfing world. I think George Greenough has influenced many spectrums of the surfing world as we know it today from photography, board design, fin design, boat making and always keeping life in trim. Don’t stare at his feet, he doesn’t like that.
2. Singlehook by Andy Davis Mens T – I like to try and keep life simple and clean, thats what I love about this one from Andy Davis. Andy’s art has always been some of my favorite and as a surfer there’s nothin’ better than a long swinging cutback. Merry Christmas Andy!
3. Captain Fin Co. Joel Tudor – When it comes to fins it can make your ride a whole lot better if you know what to match your board up with. I own many different single fin boards and this fin seems to fit. It stand up just right, not to much rake, and still enough base to keep your tail from slidin’ out. What better outline to have then from one who is the master of the single fin dace, Mr. Joel Tudor.
4. Vans Sk8 Hi – When it comes to my shoes Vans has always been on my feet from when I was small to keep me movin’. Im not much of a fashion guy but a pair of Sk8-Hi’s can be matched with everything!
5.Slide Your Brains Out by Thomas Campbell – If you want to find your stoke on surfing again or just want to watch how surfing can be related to art, Thomas has filled that gap for me. This book is killer and you should get it now. Thomas has influenced my life from what boards to ride to why capturing time on film is so fun. Thanks Thomas!
6. Axxe 3mm Long John Wetsuit – A wetsuit can keep me in the water on a chilly day for hours longer than without one so, invest in a quality wetsuit that will keep you in the water longer and more often. The Long John cut can be worn year round and gives your arms some color so you look like you don’t work a 9-5.
7. Ray Barbee – In Full View CD – When it comes to music I enjoy musicians that now how to play their instruments. I know that sounds funny but, some only know how to play a few power chords mixed with a jazz or blues cord then topped off with a distortion mix peddle that makes the chords that they do know sound wrong. So, listen to Ray. He kicks out some smooth jazzy james that sound just right and make you want to hit repeat and every album. Do it Ray!
8. Churchill Makapuu Swim Fins – Whatever it takes to keep me in the water I will buy. Bodysurfing has always been in my family that keeps a smile on our face and has allowed me to keep snapshot photos in my brain of scary closeouts. My father has passed down his Churchill fins to me that he wore in the 70s. They are as soft as my hair and keep the stoke alive every time i swim out! Thanks Dad!
9. Tyler Warren Bar of Soap 5’3″ Surfboard – New surfboard shapes and designs are constantly coming out. This Bar of Soap by Tyler Warren looks like a good hybrid and many things I enjoy riding with some modern finishes. Maybe Santa will stick this board under my tree this year after he uses it to slide down his favorite snowy hillside. I will take a 5-0 Tyler!
10. Raen Optics Squire “CHURCH” by Warren Smith – The boys at RAEN Optics have been putting out some good stylish shades to keep keep your eyes protected and from anyone knowing that your crosseyed! These pair of Squires are killer. A good clean modern design with a touch of I am important. Keep it up RAEN’ers.

Holiday Employee Picks – Corey Brindley
December 10, 2012
It’s that time of year, when we all make wishlists of the things we would like to buy and gift to others. So in the spirit of the season we decided to ask our employees what their favorite items are in shop. Here is the second in the series of posts we have queued for this month. Enjoy!

“I have lived in Southern California for most of my life. I love camping, writing, music, and surfing weird boards. I also have a vintage moustache that I glue to my face every morning. It’s a lot of work, but I manage to wake up early and take care of it. If I had to describe myself in two words it would be: Corey Brindley.”
1. Ours Casper Mens T Shirt – Awesome new clothing line from Ty Williams, rad colors on this shark tee.
2. The Ampal Creative Respect The Natives Hat – Designed, sourced, and made in LA, all from vintage textiles. I dig higher profile hats and the collection from Ampal Creative this season is tip top!
3. Raen Optics Squire Polarized Sunglasses – These shades from Raen have got some serious style, I dig smaller lenses like these.
4. Vans California Butano Mens Shirt – This shirt from Vans California reminds me of an old 50s style shirt. Buttoned all the way up and people take you a little more seriously. A little.
5. Zanerobe Vinchino Pant – I didn’t know about these until I tried ‘em on. Life Changing Pants is probably a better name for these new ones from Zanerobe. So life changing. http://www.thaliasurf.com/zavipamepa.html
6. Vans x Thalia Surf Limited Edition Delta Shoes – I designed these, so I’m kinda biased. Of course I dig ‘em.
7. Vans OTW Pritchard Shoes – At first glance you’d never think this was a Vans shoe, but the more you wear and tear these up, the better they look.
8. Ty Segall Band, Twins 12″ – Pretty much obsessed with this new album from local Ty Segall. Highly recommend this garage fuzz rocker.
9. Night Beats, 12″ Vinyl – This one from Night Beats is about a year old or so, and I still rock it all the time on the record player. Amazing psychedelic rock. Turn this up loud!
10. Beautiful Losers – I’ve probably read this book a dozen times at the shop, and still learn new stuff from an amazing group of artists put together by Aaron Rose.
11. Alex Knost Pintail 7’2″ Surfboard – Al let me borrow one of his creations a while back and I test piloted it at Trestles. These shapes are hard to come by and Knosty is definitely onto something. Had such a fun time on a board similar to this one, got me hooked.
12. Rodriguez, Cold Fact LP – If you haven’t heard of Rodriguez, you’re missing out on a legend. One of my all time favorite albums. Dude’s amazing.
