Mitch! Hows life these days?
It’s been good.
Age and hometown?
Forgot. Oceanside, California.
So tell us about your new fin company, Captain Fin Co., and how it came about?
I made some fins for my board model, and a few more to sell in stores. I asked Cj Nelson if he wanted to do some, and I asked our friend J. Acuna as well. It just went from there – we just started asking all our friends if they wanted to design their own fins.
With all of this fin designing you’ve gotten into, have you gotten the urge to pick up a planar and shape yourself a couple boards?
I have only tried one board. It was not so good. I really want to try some more. Captain is now at Chris Christenson’s factory, so maybe I will have a better chance there.
What’s a typical day like for you?
Wake up about 6. I have two kids; a 2 and 5 year old. So they get me going early. Then I check the waves and if waves are fun I will surf. Then its off to the fin world. I’m also working on some new videos and wetsuits.
Working with all these different surfers and making their fin models, who’s been the most interesting to work with?
Al Knost and Joel Tudor have been the best. They are always wanting to try some new design. I have a ton of respect for both of them.
You also ride for the company Brixton, our favorite hat company, are you involved at all with design or anything over there?
Ya, Those guys are so cool. They are great with asking for input on designs, color ways etc. They put a ton of love into designing their stuff.
So you’re living in Oceanside now, yea? What’s your favorite local spot to surf and what do you ride there?
Well, Oceanside Blvd. is where I surf the most. But I love San O’ and Uppers.
Speaking of boards, what’s your quiver lookin’ like these days?
I have a 10′ Takayama , 10′ Tanner, and a 6′ Takayama Egg. Got some others but this is what I ride the most.

Any favorite people to surf with?
Pete Stoddard when he finds his way to the beach. Alex, Tanner and Herbie are the best. They will go out anytime and have the most fun. Herbie is the best.
What’s the one, perfect session that’s stuck in your mind?
Any day I’m with my smokin’ hot wife and kids, just hangin’ at the beach.

What’s playing on your iPod right now?
Beach Boys, Half Rats.
Alright, one last question…. So you’ve got some of the greats on your fins, Ol’ Blue Eyes, Frankenstein… is your face next?
No, we don’t need little kids cryin’.
Thanks again Mitch! We gotta get you up here and surf out back @ Thalia with us! Later brotha.
