Last night was yet another Wax Ball concert!

Featuring none other than Al Knost and his band of gypsies known together as Tomorrows Tulips, with girlfriend Christina Kee on drums and support from Ford Archbold on bass, and a banger of a live set by another fresh Costa Mesa band, The Abigails, who brought a carnival-like ruckus to the lively Marine Room crowd.

Presented by Deus Ex Machina, Raen Optics, Brixton, Thalia Surf and Leaf, this Wax Ball Vol 7 turned out to be one of the raddest crowds and best dance floors thus far. Tomorrows Tulips kicked off the night with their sultry beach pop vibes, and some rad psych-bluesy jams that got the crowd all pumped. Next up and closing the night out were The Abigails, who we can only describe as Johnny Cash on a Fear and Loathing trip. Yeah, it was that rad. The crowd was frothing over. The Abigails added some more skuffs to the dance floor.

There’s something afoot at this Marine Room and Wax Ball deal we’ve started, and we’re happy and glad to be putting these things on, especially when the dance floor goes off, but we couldn’t do this without the support of our sponsors and the support of all the rad people with good vibes spirit that show up to these shows. So to all you out there, thanks again, and we’ll see you next month!

Live Performances by The Abigails and Tomorrows Tulips.

The Abigails are a fairly new band out of Costa Mesa, CA, fronted by Warren Thomas (formerly of The Growlers and Grand Elegance), who bring a dark, gritty country sound to the stage. More Johnny Cash than Hank Williams though, The Abigails are not a band to be messed with.

Tomorrows Tulips is fronted by longboarder Alex Knost and brings a lo-fi beach fuzzed pop sound to the stage. Backed by friends and surfers on stage, Tomorrows Tulips are exactly the band you’d want to see at a party down by the beach.

About The Wax Ball:
The Wax Ball is a monthly music showcase hosted at The Marine Room, Laguna’s oldest bar [1930s] which happens to be owned by the town’s former mayor. Laguna is world renowned for its artists and creativity, but the town is void of any good music. 80s night and reggae parties dominate the scene and the local surf community has been forced to head out of town for good surf rock, punk, blues, and garage. The Wax Ball happens once a month, on the second Thursday, and is bringing a refreshing and eager crowd to The Marine Room. There is literally nothing else happening in terms of music anywhere in or surrounding Laguna and Thalia Surf, Brixton, Raen Optics, and Deus Ex Machina aim to change that. Media coverage provided by LEAF.

This event is 21+. Doors at 8pm. No Cover.

Last night we threw the release party for the newest creation from the mind of Mitch Abshere and friends known as Beached Days Magazine.

It’s a refreshing new surf mag with a well curated taste and punk rock aesthetic, a fitting description for the new mag and for the vibes at the party. Filled with pro surfers like Pat O, Kassia Meador, and Jared Mell, rad dudes like Steve Sherman, Michael Thompson, Nolan Hall, we could go on forever with all the good people that came out to support, but we’ll let the photos tell the story.

We tapped a kegs worth of beercans from Kona Brew Co and yerba mate from Guayaki, free local artisan pizza, and free mags and tees for the night, and needless to say the vibes were nothin but good. We’re stoked to share some of the photos from the night with you here and really excited to say that cool things in our surf world are still happening. Thanks everyone who came out to support Beached Days Mag, and if you couldn’t make it no worries, we’ve got it for sale online and in store for all your eye candy pleasure.

Only one of their songs hit the top 20, called ‘Talk Talk’, but this one has got a real good groove to it. Fronted by leader Sean Bonniwell, the Bonniwell Music Machine later consisted of basically just Bonniwell, who claimed to have written over 300 songs from 1970 till his death this past December from lung cancer. Enjoy this one, it’s a goodie.
