Wax Ball Recap The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit & Angel and the Badman

May 10, 2013

Things are a little foggy after the round of hillbilly bluegrass that infiltrated the Wax Ball last night…

We were lucky enough to bring The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit down from Modesto, CA area for their first OC show in 7 years, and man did they show up like a bat outta hell the moment they arrived at The Marine Room Tavern. The night started off with the dialed in sounds of Angel and the Badman, a dark, country bluegrass band from Huntington Beach that’s helping to add a bit of fuzz snarled tunes to an ever growing genre of Americana-infused rock that’s sweeping the streets of the already clean Orange County locale. After their sweat inducing set the good ol’ boys of TGLTSO swept the stage with their banjos, harps, mandolins and harmonies, helping to make the ground shake with the now infamous Wax Ball dance floor, which was packed wall to bar with whiskey-stained shirts and surfers and countrymen and women alike. The crooning and raspy voices from the band set the stage for a most epic performance, and even their own version of the Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’ kept people wondering if they’d been living under a rock for the past decade never hearing something like this.

And to be honest, maybe it’s better that way. Maybe music like this is supposed to stay hidden, until you waltz into an unassuming bar in Laguna Beach, only to find yourself transported to an era where music leaves you no choice but to stomp your feet, to shoot a sip of whiskey before your next beer, and to find yourself dancing with complete strangers, and not even reach for your phone for fear you might miss the next note while trying to snap a photo.

This is The Wax Ball, and this is why we do it. Thanks to all who came out and if you were the unfortunate few who slept on this show, may it never happen again. Our little town is waiting for the next one, and we can’t wait to show you what’s next. See you next month!

Wax Ball Presents The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit & Angel and the Badman

May 7, 2013

Wax Ball Poster

Hailing all the way from Oakdale, California Thalia Surf brings you The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit for this week’s Wax Ball Concert!

Take two Americana singer-songwriters, an indie-rock veteran of a drummer, country-born bassist, and metal-bred pedal steel player, and what do you get: the rough-hewn yet driftwood-smooth; rebel-headed, but heart-of-gold sound of The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. Likened to anything from Old Crow Medicine Show and The Avett Bros. to Asleep at the Wheel, Bob Wills and even Neil Young (depending on which live set you happen to catch) they most often defy categorization, usually settling for some hybrid of Americana, folk, rock, bluegrass, and that sweet, old country & western. Playing and selling out venues such as Slim’s, Great American Music Hall, and The Independent in SF, as well as playing festivals like, The Strawberry Music Festival, and Kate Wolf Music Festival, and touring through several states consistently over the last few years, their fan-base continues to grow. TGLTSO will invade The Marine Room Tavern this Thursday and you bet yer ass there’ll be dancing and whiskey shots abound.

Opening up for these boys from the north will be the live and rocking set by Angel and the Badman, a local group from Huntington Beach. Angel and the Badman was started by Alex Coulter (lead vocals/lead guitar) and Zach Mishler (lead vocals/rhythm guitar). They both come from a punk/hardcore background but have always had a deep appreciation for country music and its roots and are sure to bring one helluva rockin set to the old wooden walls of the MarBar.

Wax Ball featuring Restavrant with Froth this Thursday!

Wax Ball featuring Restavrant with Froth!

It’s that time again surf kidlings. A time for commandeering another Thursday night (this Thursday night!) at The Marine Room here in Laguna Beach.

The past few Wax Ball’s have been nothing short of epicness so we figured why slow down? Summer’s right around the corner and the nose drip has been coming back ever since the past few swells have shown up at our shops back door. So! Without further ado:

This month’s Wax Ball Concert, presented by Thalia Surf will pit LA’s own punk blues band Restavrant against local up and comers Froth, who already start a bit ahead with what we can only assume to be one of the best band names ever.

Restavrant is lead by Texan frontman Troy Murrah. A grangy S-O-B who plays a mean harp and slide blues with such speed and diligence we still wonder where he found a drummer to keep up pace. Restavrant has been on a terror streak lately with their new single “Yeah, I Carve Cheetahs”, they also recently opened up for bands like The Growlers, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Deer Tick. So you know it’s good!

Froth will be kicking off the night in proper, surrealistic garage/pysch form. Like something out of a dream, Froth is bringing one helluva a rad sound with them to the Wax Ball. Dreamy, space-infused rock meets progressive psych in a form that makes us scratch our head and wonder how we haven’t heard of these guys before. Prepare yoself!

Doors at 8:30. $5 cover. 21+

Thursday Tunage – Love

April 4, 2013

This week’s Thursday Tunage comes to us from the recently reopened vaults of Arthur Lee and his band Love, most famous for their epic Da Capo album, blending some psych rock with 70s funk.

This song, Skid, is from their recently released Black Beauty album, a most epic long playing album that had never been released until a month ago, but recorded back in the early 70s. The entire album is insane and we definitely recommend it. For now though, get some Skid going, and check out the Black Beauty album if you get a chance, she’s a doosey.

Wax Ball Recap with Possessed By Paul James and Dano Forte’s Juke Joint Freak Show

April 4, 2013

Wax Ball
Hailling all the way from Texas, we all got a special treat this past Friday and it was to the unreal tunes of Possessed By Paul James and Dano Forte’s Juke Joint Freak Show.

The Marine Room filled up quite quickly with a crowd close to 150 frothers waiting for a chance to see the crazed live performance from the traveller from afar. Fiddles, violins, guitars, and banjos scattered the stage and PPJ brought a one man show that’s never graced the quiet streets of Orange County before. His mix of blues and hillbilly folk left a lot of first timers wondering how they’d never heard of him before. Meanwhile, Dano started off the night with his juke joint freak show of a set, busting out the blues like no other white boy around.

To all who witnessed last week’s spectacle, we thank you, and for those who missed it, never fear, because the Wax Ball series continues next week with Restavrant and special guests!

Insight’s Kill The Matador Event Recap

March 26, 2013

Insight Kill The Matador Facebook Photo Album

Last Thursday the good crew at Insight invaded the shop for the final leg of their Kill The Matador tour, a new surf flick by Patrick Pearse starring the likes of Otis Carey, Ozzie Wright, Chippa Wilson, Derek Hynd and more.

With help from PBR and Red Bull the night kicked off with a bang and the newest punk surf film to debut was blasted from our projector and speakers until the neighbors thought it was time to shut it down. With just about 100 people in attendance, and each of them receiving awesome gift bags of swag from Insight Clothing, we’d call it a successful night. We’re always stoked to draw a good crowd of friends to come to the shop, hang out, and watch a surf movie.

Check out more of the the photos on our Facebook and we’ll see you next time!
