Thalia Surf Presents: The Wax Ball Vol. 4 Featuring Spindrift & VUM

February 7, 2012

Thalia Surf Shop presents The Wax Ball Vol. 4 this Thursday, February 9th at The Marine Room Tavern, Laguna Beach CA. Featuring Spindrift & VUM!

Spindrift is a psychedelic rock band created by singer-songwriter-composer-producer-actor Kirpatrick Thomas. Founded in 1992, the band originated in Newark, Delaware along with such other local bands of the period including Jake and the Stiffs, The Verge, Boy Sets Fire, Zen Guerilla and Smashing Orange. Heavily influenced by The Doors, My Bloody Valentine, Hawkwind, Bruce Haack, and Chrome, Spindrift’s early stages were experimental and differed greatly from their present sound… They now take after legends more like Ennio Morricone [who scored Clint Eastwood films like The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, and Fistful of Dollars]. A more extensive bio info can be found via their website.

Check out the video below which is the opening titles for the movie Space Vixens, and a music video for Spindrift.

Jennifer Pearl (ex-Lion Fever, Lost Kids) and Christopher Badger (founding member of Grand Elegance) are VUM. Partners in crime, and co-conspirators for this new throbbing noir heartbeat. The two have gone off the road treading a deceptively minimalist path in comparison to the bombastic rock of their other outfits , conjuring an alternate reality where SUICIDE is being led by LINK WRAY in some weird Middle Eastern harem, where a brooding female has appeared, grabbed the mic from the karaoke machine, and hijacked the whole evening into a hypnotizing introversion, her hands beckoning the hashished clientele.

See you all this Thursday!

About The Wax Ball:

The Wax Ball is a monthly music showcase hosted by Thalia Surf Shop at The Marine Room, Laguna’s oldest bar [1930s] which happens to be owned by the towns mayor. Laguna is world renowned for its artists and creativity, but the town is void of any good music. 80s night and reggae parties dominate the scene and the local surf community has been forced to head out of town for good surf rock, punk, blues, and garage. The Wax Ball, presented by Thalia Surf and sponsors, will fill this void, bringing something to Laguna Beach that hasn’t been here since the 60′s, music worth seeing, supporting, and following.

The Wax Ball happens once a month, on the second Thursday, and is bringing a refreshing and eager crowd to The Marine Room. There is literally nothing else happening in terms of music anywhere in or surrounding Laguna and we feel that Thalia Surf and our friends are the ones who will do it the best.

Vans Surfjitsu Shoe Release Party

February 3, 2012

Much thanks to everyone who made it to the event last night. Press release via Vans and photos below.

Press Release:

Vans celebrated the release of its new Surfjitsu shoe last night with a special event at Vans by Thalia Surf Shop in Laguna Beach.   More than 300 good friends came out for the party, which featured a selection of new artwork from Surfjitsu collaborators Neil Blender and Dane Gudauskas and a fun performance by Alejandro’s Awesome Surf Band!

Hitting shelves this month, the slim, Slip-On styled Surfjitsu was inspired by traditional martial arts shoes and comes in a range of colors and materials including a blue corduroy shoe for Vans Surf team rider Dane Gudauskas and a special model for skate pioneer and artist Neil Blender.

Vans by Thalia Surf Shop, adjacent to Thalia’s South Coast Highway store, melds Vans’ heritage with Thalia’s bohemian brand of beach culture in what is Vans’ first ever boutique surf partnership.  The shop showcases a continuously evolving mix of Vans surf footwear and apparel including limited releases in shoes and signature Joel Tudor apparel.  Vans by Thalia Surf Shop is located at 915 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, CA.

Weekly Store Update

January 28, 2012

Couldn’t have asked for a more epic week in January than this past one! Insane weather, good waves, and mellow crowds!

Things are just starting to pick up here at the shop, too. This week we got in a ton of new Vans footwear: The Rad! Pack for the groms, new California Collection goods and a few new retro looking skate kicks, including the Iggy Pop collab 106 Vulc. On top of that, we were the first shop to receive the new Spring 2012 Warriors of Radness collection, and it’s pretty epic once again: retro faded cord shorts, cheesy Hawaiian shirts, and the Respect Kahuna T featuring The Duke. All pretty rad.

To round things up, Jack Coleman cruised through and did an art install on our backwall featuring some photos he took while filming his new Polyester surf movie. Our music section got a nice little update too with some fresh new vinyl and cds from Tommy Guerrero, Mikal Cronin, and The Moonhearts.

Thursday Tunage – Radio Moscow

January 26, 2012

This is an instrumental jam [heavy on the 'mental'] from the Iowa threesome Radio Moscow. Some weird Jimi Hendrix reincarnate group if you ask us. These guys are so rad and heavy. Thought we’d post this up this week as we’re headed up to LA to see them play on Saturday with another insane band from Sweden: Graveyard. Tickets are only $12 and it’s at The Bootleg Theater. Hopefully see some of you rock heads there!

The Fiberglass Chandelier of Forgotten Tides

January 25, 2012

Made by local legendary beachcomber Jim Olarte, this Fiberglass Chandelier took 10-15 years of monthly beachcombing to collect and create. Made of only found objects, the strands of this art piece contain pieces of lost ships, boats, kayaks, surfboards, and more. It serves as a reminder of the many ways in which we enjoy the ocean, and the many years we’ve had the pleasure of doing so. It hangs near the back of our shop in Laguna Beach.
