We seriously can’t get enough of Jack Coleman‘s movies. For one, it’s refreshing. It’s nice to see something completely out there, different from the ultra-hi-tech, so-clear-you-get-nauseous surf movies (don’t get us wrong, those are nice too..sometimes). Plus, with our already established affinity and love for the films of old via Greenough, Albie Falzon, Hal Jepsen and the like, it’s probably no wonder why we dig the obvious influence permeating through Coleman’s films. Mix that style, along with killer soundtracks, and progressive surfing from (some) virtually unknown surfers and you’ve got the new Groove Move film. Dig this trailer for Jack Coleman’s upcoming film, and keep your eyes peeled for when it finally comes out (we’re hearing March)! We know we will.

We love all things surf. Mix that with an excuse to party, and well, you’ve got a typical night here at Thalia Surf Shop. This Thursday is one such example. Presented by Vans, Marine Layer Productions, and Dane Reynolds, we’ve got a special prescreening of his newest surf flick: Loaded. The film started out with the idea of being a documentation of the Slow Dance tour, but after more and more weird and radical footage was shot, it budded into a full surf film. Starring Dane Reynolds, Taylor Knox, Craig Anderson, Nat Young, Andrew Doheny and Noa Deane, the film explores the road life they tend to live, waves spanning from France to Hawaii to California and beyond. This will be the first time Dane and friends have showed this movie at a shop, with the world premiere screening being held on November 1st in Ventura, CA. This special surf movie prescreening is brought to you by Thalia Surf, Vans, Marine Layer Productions, and yeah, that Dane dude too. Come join us this Thursday!

The final in our Sweet Summer Fade trilogy with Jack Coleman is here! Featuring the sun faded style of locals Justin Adams and Tyler ‘Pickle’ Warren. All shot at our local Salt Creek beach by Coleman and entirely on 16mm. From single fins to twins and beyond, both of these talented dudes are huge inspirations to us, the shop, and the local surf scene in general.
We’ve been lucky enough to be out in the water when Justin’s been out and his style is absolutely mesmerizing. Seriously, we’ve seen him get amazing barrels on a two foot day, and if you know how tall Justin is, you’ll know that that’s hard to do…
We enjoy the fact that surfing is always progressing, always changing, and stoked to be a part of a time when you’re ‘allowed’ to surf anything and everything, picking different lines and ways to surf a wave. That’s why we’ve always dug what Justin Adams is doing out in the water.
Same with Tyler Warren…whether in the studio or shaping bay or at his local break, you can tell there’s a sense of change and progression, and you can see it happening throughout every session.

Slide Your Brains Out is now getting an upgrade from Thomas Campbell himself. If you’re unfamiliar with Slide Your Brains Out, it is one of the latest hardcover books from Thomas Campbell, the creator of The Seedling, Sprout, and The Present, three groundbreaking and genre-spanding surf films. The book is filled with photos from T.moe from 1997-2012, and are dedicated to surfing in general. Now, some info about the box set:
The first print of Slide Your Brains Out was released late last year at our shop and Mollusk in SF, where we hosted the Southern California book launch with Thomas at the shop in person, signing any book that was purchased for the night. If you were unable to attend last years event, this will be the first time you’ll have the opportunity to get a personalized book from T.moe [along with a slew of other rad stuff in the box set!].
The book itself is a hardcover, filled with 156 pages of Thomas’ photos. The foreword was written by Scott Hulet and the afterword was penned by Ed Templeton. It includes photographs of Dave Rastovich, Rob Machado, Joel Tudor, Dan Malloy, Alex Knost, Kassia Meador, Tom Wegener, Robin Kegel, Skip Frye, Michel Junod, Ozzy Wright, Devon Howard, Andy Davis, Craig Anderson, Mike Stewart, Ryan Burch, Jacob Stuth, Dane Peterson, Danny Hess, Tyler Hatzikian, CJ Nelson, Mark Cunningham, Dane Reynolds and more.
This offer is only good until the end of the year, and then you won’t be able to get it personalized and signed by Thomas Campbell. It’s available for sale here at our shop and online. Makes for a most epic gift, for either yourself or a close friend [we won't judge if you keep it for yourself].

How often have you seen stickers placed neatly on car bumpers and back windshields that read, EDDIE WOULD GO? Perhaps you questioned where Eddie would go or even who is this Eddie? Well for you, the curious and the uninformed, we have answers. The name Eddie Aikau is synonymous with Hawaiian surfing and he truly epitomizes the term “legend.”
Born May 4, 1946, Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau became the first lifeguard at Waimea on the north shore of Oahu in 1971. Waimea, the gigantic spitting behemoth wave, boasts a threatening combination of neck-snapping shorebreak with faces reaching 50 and 60 feet. As a lifeguard at this treacherous spot, Eddie Aikau dared to go headfirst into places others would not, risking his life daily. He saved countless lives. Under Eddie’s watch, not one life was lost.
Throughout most of the ‘70s, Aikau secured his Hawaiian big wave reputation by winning the Duke classic in 1977 and other notable accolades. Three months later in March 1978, Aikau joined a voyage by the Polynesian Voyaging Society to retrace the ancient journey taken by Polynesians through the Hawaiian and Tahitian chain. Hours into the journey, the ship’s hull sprung a leak and capsized. Ever the lifeguard, Aikau volunteered to paddle to the 12 miles to Lanai for help. Within hours, a pilot saved the remaining crew but tragically, Aikau was never found.
So now, when you see a pickup loaded with boards and a sticker questioning where Eddie would go, you know he’d head right into any wave to rescue someone. You’d know that he’d risked his life for countless people over his short 32 years and that he’d still be doing that if he could. You’d know that as one of the only fallen heroes of surfing still celebrated today, he’s really the stuff of legend.
Want to learn more and delve deeper into who this surfing hero was? Desire to gain better understanding? See the man in action? Well, you’re in luck!
In 2012, the producers of Dogtown and Z-Boys and Riding Giants marked another posthumous note in Aikau’s story, and released Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau. The film chronicles not only Aikau’s surfing achievements and ocean courage, but also his advocacy for native Hawaiians in a time of the “New Hawaii,” his fight to keep his native culture from becoming something of touristy movie poster lore. It gives a fuller picture of who the man was behind the legend.
It won Best Picture at the Malibu Film Festival and is narrated by badass Josh Brolin.

The second video of our trilogy of Jack Coleman shorts filmed for Thalia Surf, Sweet Summer Fade 2 features a split screen of epicness that Coleman filmed while down in Noosa! Featuring Knost, Robbie Kegel, and more. It’s so good you’ve gotta watch it twice! Shot on Super 8 and 16mm in 2013. Be on the lookout for the final edit of our Sweet Summer Fade Series to be released in the coming weeks!
The majority of the footage shown in this Sweet Summer Fade 2 short was during the Vans Duct Tape Invitational at Noosa Heads. Put on by Vans and Joel Tudor, it’s our favorite longboard competition to watch. With each competitor handpicked by Joel Tudor, the contest harkens back to the good ol’ days of surf competitions, where the winner is declared based on style, noserides, and overall performance. Each board has to be a single fin too, that’s why it’s so awesome.
Enjoy Sweet Summer Fade 2!

There are no waves in the desert. And there are no great expanses of wilderness at our local beaches anymore. In an attempt to gather the best inspiration we could for our 2013 Holiday Catalog, we decided to blend the two into one weekend of adventure, camaraderie, campfires, dust, and endless skies. We brought along local friend and photographer Gabe Sullivan to capture the weekend and join in our pursuit of chasing our shadows and staying youthful forever.
For us here at Thalia Surf, that’s what life is about: youth. It defines our past, encompasses our present, and is the goal of our future. If you can strive to keep it in view, than you’re doing something right. And what better way to connect with our youthful energy, which we all find somewhat suppressed in our daily routines and monotonous driving, than to head out to the desert, a place of relaxation, adventure, and freedom.
That initial feeling of freedom is what drove this catalog. Freedom to pursue our own style and tell our own story, because when you’re out that far in the middle of nowhere, there’s not a better place to look than inward for inspiration. We hope that’s what this holiday catalog and accompanying video may give you to take home. Or at the least, light a fire for you to ‘get the hell outta Dodge’.
Our travels took us high atop boulders and a place known as ‘The Wonderland Of Rocks’ and deep down into valleys of hidden oases, where we stopped off for a beer or two before heading back to the camp. Our friends in tow, we bouldered, danced around the fire like monkeys and sang out of tune on purpose. There were even some lessons learned like ‘Don’t pee down the one way you climbed up’ yeah, that happened. Luckily that wasn’t included in our inspiration for the catalog.
Happy Holidays folks, we’re glad to be acquainted with you and hope you find what you need in our catalog, even if it is just a bit of inspiration. Enjoy the vid!
